چکیده

The potential of using cold water brown macroalgae Fucus vesiculosus for biocrude production via non-catalytic supercritical hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) was studied. Demineralization, residue neutralization, and high value-added product (alginate fucoidan) extraction processes were carried out before the biomass HTL production. Acid leaching three demineralization agents: distilled water, dilute citric acid solution, diluted acidic aqueous by-product from a continuous pilot facility. Alginate extracted H2SO4 NaCO3 bathing, fucoidan CaCl2. Experimental data show that none agents greatly efficient in removing inorganics, with extensive neutralization reaching highest ash removal efficiency 47%. produced 6 sets biocrudes characterized by elemental thermogravimetric analyses. Short (10-min retention) extent also investigated. Highest yields recorded when liquefying non-neutralized leaching, alginate, residues. On other hand, thermochemical conversions short retention time HTL, full extent, baseline (dried raw macroalgae) performed worse. Specifically, yield 28.2 ± 2.5 wt.% on dry ash-free feedstock basis alginate Moreover, energy recovery 52.8% converting

Biomass-to-biocrude on a chip via hydrothermal liquefaction of algae.

Hydrothermal liquefaction uses high temperatures and pressures to break organic compounds into smaller fractions, and is considered the most promising method to convert wet microalgae feedstock to biofuel. Although, hydrothermal liquefaction of microalgae has received much attention, the specific roles of temperature, pressure, heating rate and reaction time remain unclear. We present a microfl...

Intriguing asexual life in marginal populations of the brown seaweed Fucus vesiculosus.

Reproduction of attached large brown algae is known to occur only by sexual zygotes. Using microsatellites we show evolution of asexual reproduction in the bladder wrack promoting population persistence in the brackish water Baltic Sea (< 6 psu). Here a dwarf morph of Fucus vesiculosus is dominated by a single clone but clonal reproduction is also present in the common form of the species. We d...

Fucoidan from Seaweed Fucus vesiculosus Inhibits Migration and Invasion of Human Lung Cancer Cell via PI3K-Akt-mTOR Pathways

BACKGROUND Recently there has been an increased interest in the pharmacologically active natural products associated with remedies of various kinds of diseases, including cancer. Fucoidan is a polysaccharide derived from brown seaweeds and has long been used as an ingredient in some dietary supplement products. Although fucoidan has been known to have anti-cancer activity, the anti-metastatic e...

Divergence within and among Seaweed Siblings (Fucus vesiculosus and F. radicans) in the Baltic Sea

Closely related taxa provide significant case studies for understanding evolution of new species but may simultaneously challenge species identification and definition. In the Baltic Sea, two dominant and perennial brown algae share a very recent ancestry. Fucus vesiculosus invaded this recently formed postglacial sea 8000 years ago and shortly thereafter Fucus radicans diverged from this linea...
